In the west of Rajasthan, Jodphur is defined by a formidable fort which towers over the Thar desert. The old city, with its labyrinth of streets and cornflower-coloured houses (which give Jodhpur its name, 'the Blue City'), is surrounded by 10km of wall and 8 gates which clearly delineate where the new city begins.
