Hisa Raduha
Luce, Slovenia
The vibe is very much about appreciating nature, a philosophy that continues in the suites – four beautifully designed, polished wooden houses plus a chic, converted hayrack – as well as in the fresh, homegrown fare served in the top-notch restaurant. Co-owner Martina is the chef behind the award-winning food, following in the footsteps of her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother before her. Some book a stay just so they can experience the tasting menu. The main house, where you'll dine, was built in 1875 and extended a century later; the largest suites also date from this time, with an upper layer added a decade ago. You're a little out in the sticks here but you’ll want for nothing. There are hiking trails galore from the doorstep plus kayaking, fly fishing and epic cycle routes through the mountains nearby. Or simply spend your days in your private hot tub, and breathe in the lush riverine views from your terrace. Seriously good for the soul.
Highs
- Smart, unique architectural design in such a beautiful, natural setting makes for an unforgettable experience
- By all accounts, the food served at the famed onsite restaurant is outstanding
- The hands-on owners are super-friendly and helpful
- The fly-fishing in the Savinja river is world-class
- There are activities aplenty nearby, both in and out of the water; this is an excellent base for cyclists and hikers to explore the Savinja Alps from
Lows
- The suites are positioned quite closely together so don’t expect total isolation
- The restaurant is closed on Mondays; and remember to book ahead
- The Hayrack has a bedroom on a loft platform with low sloping ceilings: not great for taller or less agile folk
- With low ceiling heights and lack of views in second bedrooms, the owners only rent the larger suites (which sleep 2-4 in two double beds) to one family, rather than two couples

Rooms
The five separate suites are housed in converted barns which date from the 19th century, but are now beautifully eco-chic inside. Think smooth wooden floors, sheepskin throws, dessigner furnishings, fluffy bathrobes and organic toiletries. All have comfy double beds, private bathrooms and terraces, and a hot tub.
The two Treehouse Suites (sleeping 2 each) overlook the river and are perfect for couples, with glorious riparian views. A glass wall at the foot of the bed means you wake up to the soothing sight of nature every morning.
The Old Stalls (sleeping 2-4 each) each have a lower half dating to 1875, and an upper half cleverly added ten years ago. The cosy open-plan living area is downstairs, the two double bedrooms are on the upper and mezzanine floors.
The Hayrack (sleeps 2-4) is the quirkiest; it originally stood in a nearby village before being dismantled and rebuilt here. There's a semi-open-air living area at ground level with its own meditation nest; above, a glass-walled sitting room lets in spectacular river views, with ladders up to cosy sleeping lofts (one double, one single or twin). These have restricted headroom and are reached by ladders, so not suitable for taller or less agile folk.
Note that the larger suites are not suitable for two couples travelling together; the owners, from their experience, request that all guests in each suite are from the same family.

Eating
By all accounts, the food served at the restaurant here is incredible and an experience in itself. The chef (and co-owner) Martina Breznik creates fresh and beautiful dishes, inspired by nature and by the three generations of cooks in her family before her. Ingredients are freshly picked from the restaurant garden, or sourced from local suppliers; the epitome of the Slow Food ethos.
At dinner, a tasting menu is available as well as a four-course menu that changes daily. Expect perfectly cooked and lovingly presented plates without any over-the-top haute cuisinery; even the simplest of dishes, guests tell us, brim with flavour. Meats include venison, pork and chicken, there's often trout from the river. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to assist with wine pairing advice. Expect lots of fresh fruit in season for breakfast.
For lunch you can pre-order a lunch box, or walk to the other restaurant in Luce. You can also head to nearby villages (5-10km) for additional lunch and dinner options.

Kids
This is a peaceful spot, which is also welcoming to families. Because of the proximity of the river and a late-ish dinner serving time of 8pm, we would recommend this property to ages 8+, who would also be old enough to enjoy mountain pursuits – gentle hikes, visiting farms, bikes rides and river swimming. Extra beds and cots are available but please keep in mind, the restaurant feels very adult and there is no kids menu.
Best for:
Children (4-12 years), Teens (over 12)
Family friendly accommodation:
Both the Old Stall and Hayrack can sleep up to 4 and are ideal for families. Kids will love clambering up ladders into bunk beds carved into the wall in the Hay Rack, and the Old Stalls have TVs, mezzanine bedrooms and larger living areas. It’s worth noting there are no kitchen facilities in any of the suites, apart from a small fridge/minibar.
