Salzburg's all about Mozart, so if you name a hotel after him you have a lot to live up to! But this charming, family-run 32 bedroom hotel exceeded all our expectations. It's located close to the Linzergasse, a pedestrian shopping street that leads to the old town, and was completely renovated in 2019 with elegant spaces, a bistro restaurant and a bar with piano for those who play. Owner Martina Toifl has a keen eye for interior design: contemporary and classic furnishings work well together and its rooms have soothing colour tones giving more than a sniff of style and a personal touch we crave for in city hotels. Their staff were delightful - friendly and helpful. And because the hotel comes from the same stable as Salzburg Boutique Apartments, it's fully networked: they can recommend the best restaurants, book concert tickets or arrange guided city experiences to make your stay the best possible.
But here's the thing: Why are all the busts of Mozart facing the wall? Turning your back on the action might seem rude - but by the end of our stay we understood and enjoyed this quirky touch. We mustn't spoil the intrigue, but suffice to say, music isn't all about the notes. We hope you'll find some magic here too.

Rooms
32 bedrooms are spread over five floors (yes, there's a lift though doors open the opposite way you'd expect). The best views are at the top, but all rooms are beautifully decorated in a modern elegant style. Expect wooden parquet flooring, fresh fabrics by Christopher Farr and Nina Campbell and velvet cocktail chairs, all in harmonious teal and blush pink tones. Lighting gives a relaxed vibe, and large walk-in showers have gorgeous tiling in keeping with each room's colour scheme. Hotel Mozart's trademark style is evident throughout with specially commissioned photos and quirkily restored antique tables. Beds are super-comfy, windows are soundproofed and you won't be short on wardrobe space, but we did find their novel ventless eco-friendly air conditioning system difficult to fathom.
At the top of the pecking order (and top of the building) is the Suite with views of Salzburg's rooftops and mountains, a small sitting room and clawfoot bath at the end of the bed (it's the only room with a bathtub, all others have showers). Note: all rooms have double beds so if you require a twin or triple, the best option is the Junior Suite, which has a built-in extra bed and worked well for us and our teenage daughter. If travelling solo and need less space, we'd happily opt for the Single or Cozy Double.

Eating
You can eat in their cosy bar bistro restaurant which extends the length of the ground floor. Recently renovated, it was a pleasure to be in.
Breakfast (7-10.30am) is a good continental style buffet with spread of juices, smoothies, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cheeses, hams and tasty home-made pastries, as well as eggs cooked to order.
For dinner they've struck upon some very delicious regionally-inspired tapas: juicy mini-burgers, Austrian slowed cooked beef and fillet of char with couscous, plus veggie options like bruschettas, tortilla or red pepper gratin. Be sure to leave room for the creative desserts such as their top notch pana cotta with honey and walnuts as well as home made cakes.
Their bar offers a selection of cocktails and aperitifs: try their very own 1756 Mozart cocktail (gin lillet, prosecco, lemon thyme and sour cherry).
If you're eating out you'll be spoilt for choice. They provide recommendations in your room, but our favourite spot for Wiener Schnitzel is the Gasthof Goldgasse in the old town.

Activities
- You're in Salzburg, a Unesco-listed city, so meandering along the pretty streets of the historic centre and window shopping is a must.
- Music and Mozart is everywhere: Wolfgang's residences are open to the public and there are always plenty of concerts being performed.
- If you prefer to explore with a local they can set you up with tailormade city tours accompanied by a knowledgeable guide.
- Cycle around the city: they offer bike rentals from April to October as well as bicycle tours meeting at the place Mirabellplatz.
- Don't leave without wandering through the Mirabell Palace and Gardens (five-min walk from hotel) where the Sound of Music was filmed, or take the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress with its amazing views of the city.
- Soak up the atmosphere in one of Salzburg's historic cafes - we love the upstairs terrace at Cafe Tomaselli for the best cakes and coffee ice cream in town.
- Learn how to prepare an apple strudel: you can request a cookery lesson with the chef.

Kids
Children are very welcome and under 6's stay for free. There are a couple of rooms that can sleep one extra child, a suite that has a double sofabed, and some other rooms that can interconnect. Most rooms can take a baby cot on request. There are no specific facilities for children but there is plenty within walking distance to keep children entertained, from Salzburg's kids' museums to film locations from the Sound of Music.

The two Junior Suites, which have large built-in single daybeds, are ideal for a family of three, while the Suite has a sofabed that can take two children in the same room. Interconnecting Classic Double Rooms (for a family of four) are also available on request. Most rooms can take a baby cot for free on request - best avoid taking the Cozy Double Room because of such limited space for a cot.

Location
The Mozart Hotel is located in Andräviertel, between Kapuzinerberg park and the Mirabell Palace. It's a seven-minute walk from Linzer Gasse.
By Air:
Fly into Salzburg (5.2km) or Munich (179km). It's a 15-minute taxi ride to the hotel from Salzburg airport. You can get away without hiring a car here but it does give more flexibility if you'd like to explore the region - see our car rental recommendations. There is no parking at the hotel but they offer reduced-price tickets for a parking garage nearby.
