Whitehouse
Chillington, Devon, United Kingdom
Inside, it's refreshing not to find another B&B just going through the motions to tick all those boutique boxes. Nothing's done by halves. Upstairs you'll find spacious rooms with all you'd expect and more: from REN toiletries to hidden minibars. Downstairs there are vintage finds, giant contemporary lamps and a pop-art painting of Audrey Hepburn with an iPod. Oodles of theatrical style and humour; slick yet homely. Unwind in sitting rooms with small open fires and leather sofas, or saunter out to the garden where you can curl up with a book or the paper on a lounger in the sun. Finding anywhere nice like this to stay in south Devon used to be a real problem. Thanks to Whitehouse, life just got easier.
Highs
- Handsome Georgian house, restored with flair and fantastic attention to detail; we loved the jars of marshmallows and toasting forks above the fire, and the minibars cleverly hidden in wooden chests
- A bolthole for all weathers, with two sitting rooms and DVDs for rainy days and a large lawn for croquet in the sun
- Well located for exploring the stunning coastal paths and beaches of south Devon; Dartmouth is 10 minutes' drive away, Salcombe 25 minutes
- Unlike many boutique B&Bs, teens and dogs are welcome
Lows
- The house changed owners in 2019 and was refurbished; we have not revisited since then but guest feedback is very positive
- Rooms at the back face the main village road, though the traffic isn't that busy and windows are double-glazed
- Don't expect slick hotel-style service; this is more like staying in the home of a very stylish friend
- The B&B does not serve dinner, but there's a good gastropub in Chillington (5 mins walk) and lots of other options a short drive away

Rooms
A wide staircase takes you up to five airy bedrooms. Expect stripped oak floors, quirky Florence Broadhurst wallpapers, arc lamps, handmade wooden beds, and clever blinds which lift from below. Mattresses are superb, sheets are Frette linen and there are heaps of pillows, as well as fluffy white towels and bathrobes. We liked the unusual minibars: wood-clad chill boxes filled with wine, beer, organic drinks and complimentary milk and water in old-fashioned bottles. You also get all the gadgetry: Smart TVs with Freesat and fast WiFi.
Bathrooms have REN products and good-quality showers and baths (either free-standing or unusual square-shaped Omni tubs with rain showers overhead). You'll find at least five different products to try depending on whether you want to be revitalised, invigorated or relaxed.
Our favourite was Room 5, with an enormous emperor-size bed, a velvet chaise longue, and a row of windows overlooking the lawn. The highlight was the fabulous bathroom with a lead-clad bath and huge rainshower.
Room 4 lacks the garden view but has a romantic four-poster bed, a crystal chandelier, and a roll-top bath in the bedroom.
The largest is Room 3, tucked away in the eaves and accessed via a private staircase. It has a bedroom and a separate sitting area with a sofabed that can be made up for two additional guests, as well as a free-standing tub and a huge shower in the bathroom. It’s lovely, but the low beams mean tall guests will have to duck.
Rooms 1 and 2 are equally stylish and can be interconnected if you're with teenagers.
Features include:
- Minibar/fridge
- WiFi
Eating
Breakfast is excellent and runs from 8.45 until 10. Homemade mueslis in Kilner jars, warm pastries, thick yoghurt and a delicious selection of fruits. But it was the tempting cooked menu that won us over. Expect menu heroes like a Full English, a sausage or bacon sandwich, avocado and poached egg on toast, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to set you up for the day.
For a hearty local dinner, walk 5 mins into Chillington for gastro fare at The Bear and Blacksmith - perhaps gilthead bream with Salcombe lobster, or shoulder of local lamb with chickpeas, roasted squash and mint pesto. Most veg is home grown, meats come from their farm 3 miles away, fish from the Salcombe 'Hustler' boat, and even the Luscombe juices are Devon-based, so food miles are minimal. Alternatively, a few miles down the (winding) lane is the atmospheric Millbrook Inn in tiny South Pool: we loved this small, cosy pub overlooking a charming brook. Also worth a visit is The Pig's Nose in East Prawle, and The Seahorse in Dartmouth for seafood and grilled meat dishes.
For lunch by the sea, don't miss the rustic and perennially popular Beach House, sitting in the dunes at South Milton Sands. From one busy little room, it serves everything from full English breakfasts to beefburgers and moules mariniere, as well as sweet treats, hot drinks and lighter snacks.
Features include:
- Minibar/fridge
Activities
- Stay put: the roaring fires, weekend papers, games and chest of DVDs invite you to hole up in winter. In summer play croquet on the lawn (ask the owners for a set)
- Go walking: the area stretching east from Salcombe has some of the loveliest coastline in England. Start from East Prawle (10 minutes' drive). The B&B has a selection of maps and you can ask for a picnic hamper
- Head to the beach. The famous Slapton Sands, with its village cream teas and 2-mile stretch of pebbled beach, is a couple of miles away. There's also Blackpool Sands (nearer to Dartmouth) - voted one of the cleanest, most beautiful beaches in Britain
- Dozing on the Dart, lovely Totnes combines New Age quirkery with centuries of history. Visit the 15th-century St Mary's Church, the 11th-century Guildhall and the healing waters of Leech Wells
- Hire a motor launch to explore the Dart Estuary (the B&B can arrange)
- Cycle the nearby lanes and coastal pathways
- Further afield you can explore glorious Dartmoor National Park with its rugged gorges, pretty reservoirs and tumbling rivers. It contains the largest number of Bronze Age remains in Britain, and is famous for its granite tors, home to the annual Ten Tors challenge
